etrian odyssey III - list of gameplay changes

Below is a bunch of lists that explain all of the changes that have been made to the Etrian Odyssey 3 game. This page is constantly being updated, so be sure to watch the front page for any news.

ALL of this information has been pulled off of the articles from Nyleveia.com. This is just information I skimmed off of each article and compressed. All articles can be read in the Etrian Odyssey subsection on their website. Enjoy!

Important: The names included below are for the Japanese release only. There is currently no news yet if the game will make it over to America. However, if it does, chances are the names mentioned below will more than likely change!

General Game Features:

  • The game will include a multiplayer mode using wireless mode. Multiplayer mode will differ from main game, allowing players to explore the high seas on their own ship.

  • While equipping items to your party, you are now capable of using the stylus in additional to the traditional buttons to equip things. There is also a special "Other" toggle button that allows you to view all of the other members of your party to equip items to them in the same manner. - Demonstrative Youtube Video
Classes and Skills:
  • There are ten classes. They are: Princess/Prince, Phalanx, Monk, Shinobi, Pirate, Warrior, Ballista, Zodiac, Beastking, and Farmer.
  • Monk is the only class currently known to have healing capabilities.
    • Update: The Princess/Prince class now has confirmed healing skills, however the Monk seems to be a "must have" in terms of healing, though it depends on playing style.

  • Some of the Alchemist's skills include: Astral Thunder, Binary Star Ice, Dark Ether, Ether of Crushing Death, and Meteor.
  • The game now features Subclasses! This allows characters to acquire the skills of another class.
  • There are three different sets of skills: Common, Main, and Limit. Common skills are general skills for all classes (HP UP, TP UP, and so forth). Main skills are class specific. And finally the new Limit skills are special skills - read the tab below for more information. The character customization screen has tabs for each skill type, but Limit Skills have their own menu.
  • Limit Skills: Up to five characters can be invovled, and they are dependant to an item equipped to the head of your party. Once the Limit Gauge has reached max for all of the involved characters, the skill can be used.

  • In terms of each character's art profiles, not only do we get the normal default artwork, but each portrait also has a secondary color palette to choose from.
Enemies and FOEs:
  • One confirmed enemy/FOE is the Leviathan that has appeared, named, in a single screenshot.
  • There is now a new breed of yellow FOEs that demand certain requirements be met before they make an appearance.
  • Yes, the orange FOEs are still present in the game.

Battle System:

  • There will be more to the battle animations, however, for those who do not welcome the idea of seeing the same battle animations over and over again, there is an option for battle speed with Slow, Normal, Fast, and No Wait as the possible selections.
  • Main Skills are green in the battle menu, however Subclass skills are blue.
  • The battle system has been touched up making it more obvious who the active attacker is, allowing enemy damage to strike all members of the party at once, and making the battle types slash, bash, and pierce more distinctive animation-wise.

Map System:

  • There appears to be some sort of auto-mapping feature that will allow you to record a set path on the map and travel along it by pressing the play button.
  • Tent icons represent locations that explorers can rest without worrying about enemy attacks.
  • The yellow FOEs still appear on the map.
  • There are mud patches that reportedly slow the characters down in some way.

The World:

  • This game's town is called Amolode/Amorodo and features a sea harbor.
  • There is the one labyrinth that exists in Amolode but there are others located in other locations across the seas.
  • Players will be allowed to set on the high seas, opening up new features in the game. The sea acts as if it were its own "labyrinth" requiring players to map out locations. FOE icons have also been seen making an appearance on these maps.
  • Mapping icons differ between Sea Mode and Land Mode.
  • While out on the high seas, players can now participate in a fishing feature.
  • Some of the confirmed areas so far include: a bar with a tropical theme (and a busty barmaid), a forest-like area not unlike the first stratums of the previous two games, and a lava location (with lava rafts).
