I think it's hard to be original is kind of a myth. Rather cliches and tropes, used well, tell us way more about a character much quicker, and let them move on and focus on other things. So if a guy is a nerd but he's not the main character, you don't have to develop him into a nerd over the first 2...

Though those are shooters, so it's arguably apples and oranges. Us haughty, posh, American/European RPG players look upon those covers and scoff. "Ugh, how *distasteful* Waiter? Waiter, yes, this game is pointing a *gun* in my face, could you send for a new one."
