I've split off posts following Garrett's original question.

Garrett - thanks for the suggestion but it's not something that phpBB offers as part of it's standard suite. If there is a modification available, it's likely to be a significant change to the forum and will make patching the forum very difficult so it's something that we're not going to be looking in to at this time :).
