Yeah, D&D 3.5 got ridiculous after 15th Level.
I tried running a 15th level Planescape game once and it was very difficult to challenge the party. Admittedly, the Young Adult Silver Dragon PC comboing his breath attack with the Wizard who could cast 7 Swift action Force Blasts (or something) through his two Bastard Swords in as many seconds kinda broke all but the most determined encounters.
At least I got to use a maze of Prismatic Walls filled with 21st level FOEs. That was amusing.
Though my crowning moment of 3.5 awesome was as a PC casting Evards Black Tentacles (with its 25 Ft Radius) into a sealed 15x15x10 room and the ensuing havoc.
The 'You WHAT?' look on the GM's face was priceless. Tentacle raped the encounter. Literally. Well, and the rest of the party, but hey, details, details...
At least 4th Ed Paragon progression is a little better. Things only get absurd when you get into Epic now, which is as things should be. Oh, and Wizards etc. don't have stupid progression anymore (From "Well, I've used my 2 magic missiles for today so runaway!" ===> "I lob a fourteen spell combo in the space of 4 seconds and gib the ancient red dragon" as was the case in 3.5)

Wow, this thread really took off.
Eharper, you wrote "Selling thy soul"? I remember that guide.
I like the use of battle/gameplay roles that've been showing up in various kinds of games over the past several years, and one of the benefits of D&D's recent edition is how transparent it's made the concept. Games like True20 and, arguably, d20 Modern already had these, but in 4E D&D it's extremely clear what they are supposed to do.
