The end of AIM thing really hit me a lot harder than I would have expected.

I was shocked by the number of people I saw lamenting its demise! The only people I knew who only talked to me on AIM ended up switching to Line.

AIM has ended? Wow that's a throw back to the past when I would spend forever on Trillion on every messaging client going.

Meanwhile, ICQ still exists but everyone I know has stopped using it about ten years ago… and I don't know if anyone misses MSN Messenger.
(The one platform French people of my generation miss is Caramail, but it was more than an instant messenger: it was a free e-mail service with integrated chatrooms that let you use custom aliases, smileys you could combine and change the colour of etc. Also a few crude emoticons like buttocks, but you had to pay to use those. It was so popular among high schoolers that the one “alternative” bar in my hometown had computers set up so people could go to Caramail while they drank and played card games.)

Everyone I knew who lived in Europe used MSN, like real life kids at school (although not quite when I started in 2001ish) and it died off around 2006ish when Facebook started to gain popularity and unlimited text plans came around. Most Americans used AIM. Nobody really used Yahoo Messenger at all.

ICQ, MSN, everything is slowly dying.
Except mirc, that thing still exists.
Been using it for like 17 years now. \o/
