Weapons don't change class through upgrades in Tri. If you're talking single player, long swords are unlocked through progressing the story, online it just takes a bit to get the materials for one, since the early monsters aren't used in making any.
Also, twin swords are amazing in portable 3rd, can't wait till the game comes out.

Ah, geez... Looks like I'm better off stickin with the Lance until then... xD Or maybe the hammer, since the premise is similar: No guard, all out attacks... The only relief when I change would be the Longsword's ability to dodge much more easily. XD
