I just saw this film by Werner Herzog--the images are astounding. I heartily recommend it to everyone (particularly anyone who is at all interested in art, expression, the origins of human spirituality, and the history and development of man and culture.)
The cave paintings that were discovered in France in the Chauvet Cave are at least 32,000 years old. They show one panel with a painting that had been scratched over by a cave bear, and then 5,000 years later a new painting was done on top.
Staggering, if not unfathomable time has passed since these panels were painted--is this the birthplace of human culture and modern man, the film asks?

They were only able to bring a non-professional camera into the cave, in any case, the quality is much better than youtube would lead you to believe.
