If you're playing for the story, as one would with RPGs, wouldn't it be best to start with the first two games?

Doesn't really matter with the Ys games.

They are indeed connected, but rarely refer to events that have transpired in any of the other games.


But if you really wanted to go and play them in chronological order:

1 ) Ys Origin (700 years before Ys I)
2 ) Ys I
3 ) Ys II (takes place like 5 minutes after I, tops)
4 ) Ys IV
5 ) Ys: The Oath in Felghana
6 ) Ys V
7 ) Ys VI
8 ) Ys Seven

Well, Mask of the Sun is canon, but Dawn of Ys feels more fun. xD Though, the Vita's gonna be having a remake of that game that might be the true canon of Ys IV, though.
