I can't give you much book recommendations (but awesome members of ItL did it), since I had bad literature teachers (we focused too much on comedy than on novels or short stories). I mostly read Moliere and some Renaissance authors at middle and high school.
All I can say is good luck with your job Starfe, it won't be easy but it's worth the try to help these kids. Take care.

Oh! I thought of another one. For any of your lower-level readers who are even vaguely interested in sports, anything and everything by Matt Christopher. I think it's all the man writes. o.o

I've been thinking about books for internet-literate kids, and if you can ever find a copy of the original Train Man, some of your students might be able to grasp it. It's literally a transcript from 2channel but it's a sweet love story.
The other thing would be Homestuck Book 1 but good luck ever finding that in a store lol

One of my students is reading The Inferno.
And I don't have nearly enough copies of Scott Pilgrim to meet demand.
