Well the only reason one may bring more recent games into it is to ease off the criticism of FFIV. It's true that most games then had terrible and simple stories and I'd be equally critical of them. My overall point really is that it's OK if a game lacks story and characters if the game itself is interesting. It doesn't matter than Ryu and Ken are fighting Bison "to be the strongest fighters ever!" because the game itself is so good. If FF had a more interesting system, I wouldn't be anywhere near as critical of it. I think the only thing to do apart from walk from one cutscene to the next is get the extra summons for Rydia. There's no other distractions, nothing to work on like Materia configs or any side-quests or subgames like monster training, a casino, a house that you customise and other things that seem to crop up in JRPGs ever since the SNES and possibly NES era.
Just to look at the other side of the coin, I was speaking to someone about this recently and he made the good point that it's a good thing that FFIV didn't have any customisation or anything because it means that the game designers can tell what abilities you'll have at any given point. Therefore, they can make a boss that can only be killed in a certain way and they'll know that you have that ability or spell. Generally they can tailor the fights for specific parties because they know what you'll have rather than in, say, Etrian Odyssey where you could have any combination of classes and skills.
Anyway, I keep getting sidetracked by trying to justify what I'm saying. My original point was simply that it's just an average JRPG for its time and it's overrated BUT I'll still be very interested to see what they've done with it. In other words, let's hope it's an actual remake rather than "Look, 3D!"

Well, I wouldn't look at the older games as terrible stories. Console RPGs were still relatively new then and developers were experimenting and seeing what worked. I think it was just like it is now. There were some stories that were bad, some that were good and some that were quite good. I feel FF IV was quite good, but I know you disagree. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on that.
True, FF IV may not have had any customization, but pretty much all RPGs were like that at that time, it was the norm. The only exception was FF III. But none of the Dragon Quest/Warrior had customization, either.
As for the fighting system, I say again, it had the same fighting system as VII as well as many other FF's. The ATB system started with IV and was pretty much used for the next six FF's (all the way to IX). And I found all of those enjoyable, including IV.
But like you said, the changes of the remake look to only improve IV and I am looking forward to it. Only two weeks to go.
