I liked the religion aspect; what were your objections to it?
Of Civ 2 and 4, though, I actually prefer Civ 2. I haven't played 4 in a while, but I totally agree that it was made "too pretty" and too accessible -- and I'm a sucker for easy games (I'm not so awesome at games, so I play on easy mode >___>;;)

Ooooh, gotcha! Yeah, it's like you really want that cultural bonus and technology and all that, but ocasionally I found myself passing on being the founder of certain religions (*Cough*christianity*cough*) in order to keep things ... more... fun? You know, like being the Germans and being all Taoist and Buddhist. Or the Hindu/Jewish Russians.
