I gotta vote for Metroid, just because of the whole "She's a she!" aspect.

But - YEAH! to what Maxine said. Samus is a rare strong female lead, especially when we're talking retro gaming.

Gender of the lead aside, I just like Metroid better. Even though I was terrible at it... one of those games that was much more fun to watch than play.

I really don't see how megaman and metroid are even comparable. Shooter and adventure? That's like comparing guitar hero to final fantasy.

anyway...

one is an awesome sidescrolling shooter that hates you, and every enemy wants to ram its robotic arm up your ass. Victory is very rewarding and may make you stand up and yell YEAH

the other is an adventure into the unknown, sending you alone into an abyss of hazards, and you have to explore every possible corridor to find the right upgrade and continue forward, so you can use your skills to fight more abominations and take down evil...and then there's the Prime series, which takes everything that makes Metroid good and then makes it beautiful and puts story into it.
