Well, it's like trans fat, which is so lethal that Denmark has banned it entirely. Also, there is no reason to use it except greed. Even saturated fat is better than trans fat! But companies still use it because they can. I'm a firm believer in strong government safety standards for food. Food should not be a commodity or mass produced -- it is a necessity of life! We eat over processed, shitty food with little nutrintional value and then sit around debating why everyone is so goddamn fat, dying of heart attacks, and getting diabetes like crazy. HM. MAYBE ITS THE SHITTY FOOD WE EAT.
Take the doughnut, for example. Perhaps not the healthiest food ever, but if you make it properly and with decently healthy ingredients (ie; not just the worst, cheapest crap you can find) there's no reason why they can't be eaten. Cake, too, and pie. It's not necessarily the type of food that we eat, it's what goes INTO the food that we eat.
And you don't want to know what sort of horrors can be in that wonderful catch-all category of "flavoring"
Oh, and all the preservatives we eat? YUM. Sodium causes heart attacks say what?
SIGH Forgive my rant. I just read an article about how the peanut butter food manufacturer that caused all the salmonella was like "Hey, not our fault. We're not responsible for making healthy food. It's the FDA's job to make sure its healthy. We just make it according to our bottom dollar"

*nods* Definitely in PR 101, which I've taken the course, btw. ^_^; We actually had to do an exercise where we wrote a press release about a topic that could have been bad for our company if we didn't word it right. PR 0 is knowing you SHOULDN'T take the blame.
And I only wish I was joking...
