Portrait of the Duke of Monmouth (presumed)

According to popular legend, after the Duke of Monmouth was executed for treason it was discovered that no portrait of him existed. The Duke's head was temporarily re-attached to his body in order for the above portrait to be painted. It now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

In truth, however, several paintings had been done of young James, including this one also at the same gallery:



It is now doubted whether or not the "Dead Man" portrait is actually the Duke. If not, than who is he? Is he sleeping or dead?

One of history's many mysteries!

Looks like I have little choice but to start sketching again. It seems that it is impossible for me to leave the realm of art. Someone, somewhere or something will always pull me back. This time I simply must do a number of character concepts in addition to costume profiles as it would be too much to explain it to another artist. Especially one still stuck in a box.

Another in my series of "historical dead portraits" you can see where the baby was initially painted, but then (in)famously painted out when baby Sophie died 40 days after her birth.

This being, of course, Marie-Antoinette and her children.
