I figure that's topic worthy, Maxi. :P

That is very interesting, indeed. I find myself arguing with myself on that matter. My first instinct says those games are terrible and shouldn't be allowed to be sold through a conventional market. The other part of me says "Well, they can make and sell what they want. It's up to the consumer to buy it.". So while I would discourage the games and I'm against the development, I won't bite anyone's head off for enjoying them simply because it's their right. Nor will I complain to the developers.

I don't really care about the rights of a digital character. I find it rather hypocritical that there's so many people against the "games" but are able to defend murder sims (not violent games but the "murder sims" as they've been dubbed, like Hitman and Manhunt). Plus, this merely covers the games and manga and "normal" rape porn are still available for distribution.

I thought of making a topic in the Debate forum when I saw it the a few nights ago (two? crap inFamous fucked my sense of time) then I figured I didn't care enough about the subject. Quite frankly, if I'm to think that violent video games don't cause mass murdering hysterical lunatics, then rape sims don't cause [s]tentacles[/s] people to go around raping girls. To me, that's the end of the whole thing: I find the games deplorable but believe they're "harmless" games.
Plus, think of the tentacles. They're out of work without this genre.
The biggest surprise, I suppose, is that these games make up like 10-20% of the Japan PC market.
Which is like 95% eroge anyway.
I'd like to say this though: South Korea has banned porn. South Korea has 6 times the average number of sexual assaults.
When they're not playing Starcraft.
*Makes this into a topic*

Hold on, I'll brb to post my own thoughts on the matter.

Edit: I don't think it's Discussion Forum worthy but it's still something to talk about.

A lot of the points you voiced, Scy, are exactly what I think.

Me: I am DISGUSTED by rape scenes. I don't mind the occasional hard sex scene, I mean most of you have seen some of the images I've posted in the NSFW forum from time to time. However, Kino has argued many times that those images could also not look like rape at all.

I don't appreciate them, however, to ban them outright in games. And seriously, let's think of the sort of games that we are talking about.

We have the style of games that are all about rape and humiliating the women in a game. There's no reason for these to even exist in my opinion. But then, let's think of these games that DO feature rape but are fantastic in and of themselves Tsukihime and Saya no Uta jump to mind almost immediately. Their rape scenes were an integral part of the story for the most part.

And I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceburg - I've only gotten through a handful of VNs myself, barely enough to count on one hand.

To strict all rape out of a particular genre... I don't think that's right since it restricts creative flow. However, it is something that should have a restriction on it, but how can you just blindly pick and choose.

And then there is: the consumer should be able to make the conscious decision for themselves. It IS just a game. Some very weird games, though.

I'm going to make myself unpopular here and just say that I think violence in the media certainly has an effect on youth and crime.

Not that I feel playing violent video games = will kill someone

But in the casual attitude in which such violence is portrayed. Violence is cool. Raping women is cool. Women are just sex objects. Fuck that bitch. Shoot her in the head!

Trust me, I've fucked and killed my fair share of GTA3 hookers. Doesn't mean I can't register fiction from reality.

Sadly, there are 8 year olds out there doing the same thing, and they can't make that decision. Well, of course, you scream at me. 8 year olds shouldn't be playing M-rated games. Obviously that's the point of game ratings and parental involvement, but most parents don't give a shit or have no idea what such games are like. Thus, the games end up in the hands of those unable to decipher realized violence from real violence.

Just like some people can't distinguish fantasy rape sex from real rape, or rather don't want to; they want to rape women. They view sex as power, as violence. Such games, such porn, it's just a representation of what they need.

Clearly such people are crazy.

Unfortunately, the expression "One bad apple" seems most apt.

So, will playing these games make you want to rape people?

Not unless you already want to rape people.

And to me it's just catering to the people in this manner just seems to be saying that as a culture they find rape to be not only acceptable but as a humorous pasttime, considering the game. :\

I think it's a hard choice to make. I wouldn't want to be the politicians that have to sit there and debate this.
