I've sort of learned to identify potential dumbfuck pedestrians—someone needs to invent a catchy portmanteau to label these folks (peDUHstrians?)—from far away and to monitor their movement patterns. When identified, I usually try to make eye contact and exaggerate my own movements a bit in an attempt to communicate to them (and to others around) my intended course or to negotiate "which side do you want" that way, before we're too close.
Of course, by definition they're dumb fucks who don't understand shit, so such attempts are often in vain.... This sort of communication does work with reasonable, alert people just fine though. ^^
And no, don't give me that dirty look after you and your 15 BFFs walking abreast on the sidewalk force me into the side of a building and I *graze* one of you. Srsly. At least make a token course adjustment to acknowledge opposing traffic.

Nearly clipped another stupid bitch who was texting. Some other pedestrians were like "and look at this person abOUT TO GET BYA BIKER WATCH OOOOUTTT!!!" and she jumped the fuck out of my way at the last minute. She was doing her "DUUUR I MEANDER WHEREVER THE FUCK I WAAAAAAAAANT" thing.
