Er, and in terms of final boss failing:

[spoiler]The first phase of the Overlord was easy, couldn't you just spam Magibait for his second form? I've never actually done it, but I do remember that he liked using elemental attacks. And the bait skills did pretty good damage. If that's what you mean by fail, it happened in EOII as well. But if you mean something else, please don't elaborate. I want to experience this game mostly without spoilers...[/spoiler]
