EOII spoilers: (5th stratum)
[hide]there was a squirrel in most stratums that stole your warp wire. I always carried 3 on me, so the only time it bothered me was the time I had to give a warp wire to a guard for a quest, then got one stolen, then I realized I didn't stock up last time I went to the store. I was on a part of the floor where you had to go up before you could go down to the geometric pole, but I made it with the help of the fact that the only foes I ran into were weak unless they could land a curse on you.[/hide]

My sister and husband and random accounts from TV Tropes had it well ingrained into my head to have 2 Nectars and 2 Ariadne's Threads at all times. Actually, as a rule of thumb, I carry at least 2 of every utility item (Tents, Thericas A/B, etc).
It's easy to see how someone would have that problem, though. When I first played EOII, even with my new characters outfitted in high end equipment (I created a party on my husband's file, which was in postgame), I died right out the door into the Labyrinth and lost all my progress. Made me feel stupid.

I don't quit! I just rage! Then I channel my unholy wrath into something productive! It isn't really about losing, it's about losing progress of any sort. I'm a longtime Megaten player, I cut my teeth on boss fights that ride me hard and put me away wet. I just don't like having to do tedious things over again.

Dragon Quest 9 and EOany are good examples of games where being a certain level is rarely enough on its own.
That said, I've never really gotten the negativity toward high-leveling. If it does take something away from the gameplay, it likely shouldn't anymore than mastering systems or exploiting weaknesses in opponents.
Also, 16 is a high level for Narmer? I figured it was about on target as a benchmark.
