I really wish they fine-tune Loyalty if they bring it back; the Beast was an interesting idea but the execution was flawed with the high amount of all-target attacks, the high damage of the AE attacks coupled with using the Defense of the original target, and the low HP cap. Oh well, I suppose.

Then again, this is really only an issue on post-game bosses. The average encounter isn't an issue and, really, Loyalty works perfectly fine (if not preferred) here thanks to the Beast's ability to Heal without using TP.

Personally I think the game is hard without being too hard. I've no doubt some games out there are much more difficult than this one, but, I still think, to me personally, it is one of the harder games I've ever played - but I'm also the sort of person that five years ago would have told you "Chrono Trigger is SO hard!" only to pop it in my DS and realize 'umm, this isn't hard... it's just repetitive."

Difficulty is definitely subjective.
