I just rolled up a Cleric with STR 15 CON 16 DEX 14 INT 15 WIS 16 CHA 15...I SO want to somehow use him.

and i know teiflings arent inherently evil... but they are part demon... it'd make sense for one to join the demon horde! but a certain someone doesnt know anything about the fun of total and utter chaos!
ut yeah... just gotta modify demarrow into a more... focused 1st level character... for whatever reason i built him as if hed be lvl 7 or something lol

dont worry though... plan for a defensive 2-hander... not tower shield feat abuse, lol

never really liked shields...i dunno why.. just bucklers >>

my fighter uses an orc double axe with a buckler, works good to me

i like having a buckler on 2-handed builds.... just because the free AC just in case you dont or cant attack

that said... ran into a feat called "Shield of Swings" (attack with a 2-handed weapon does 1/2 damage but grants you a +4 shield bonus to AC) the prerequisites are 13 STR, power attack and BAB+1
yay or nay on that mighty GM of noodly goodness?

as long as it only works for one round at a time, and you clearly indicate if you are using it beforehand, that's fine

i do believe its for the round and the way its worded souns as if i need to hit first THEN decide if i half my damage

but a 4 shield bonus to AC with a 2-hander sounds scary to me lol

Is there any way to make spellcasters not so squishy at level one? Or are they just stuck at that point?

arcane casters? high dex and the Toughness feat. eventually you get bracers and rings that raise your AC without incurring a spell failure chance.

Ultimately though, an early level caster IS going to be squishy, and that's why a good party is essential. D&D 4e makes it like an MMO where the classes all have balanced survivability, and I think that's terrible

If ya ask me... arcane casters are an investment.... as soon as you hit those 3rd level spells you are golden... till then.... cower behind your fighters, clerics, paladins...

you have survivability options, but youre better off building your strengths than covering your weaknesses as a caster, in my opinion

believe me... high level casters have the survivability, control, options, and damage that any class SHOULD be jealous over. unless youre a psion. but thats a different matter entirely

Mister noodles would not let me play the overpowered Cleric? Even if I took the human racial bonus and put it into DEX? How sad! And I only rolled 80 for my starting wealth. He'd be naked!
