How does it compare to previous games?
I am considering picking this game up. I love EO1 and EO3. EO3 was a blast. I'm worried this one is too different because it doesn't really have a labyrinth and it seems like character roles aren't as defined as much. How does this game compare? Worth getting if I liked previous ones?

Character roles are defined a bit better than in EOIII, actually. Also, there is a labyrinth, it's just split a bit more, with a much-improved version of the sea exploration thrown in between strata.
I'd say it's a massive improvement all around.

I agree full-heartedly with this.
While EO3 is still my favorite of the series, EO4 improved a lot of things for it. I mean, it has more likeable characters in my honest opinion. Then again, I am more a fan of obvious alignment characters.

The biggest loss from 3 to 4 is probably not having the Princess or Yggdroid classes. And spears as a whole, I suppose.

<3 This game is absolutely charming. I didn't like EO3 but this game has won my heart back and renewed my faith. My favorites list is now: EO > EO4 > EO2 > EO3.
As for there not being "labyrinths", I know that things being sorta scattered and smaller might seem like a detraction, but it's not. It is refreshing. Each new area was well themed and exploration was never given a chance to get old. And there were so many objectives I never had that moment of "... why am I even exploring this?" It was great to be able to bounce from the huge enormous and difficult labyrinth, and just enter one of the smaller caves, and then there was an overworld to explore. It makes the game feel much less linear.
