Well, an entire class change would probably require something similar to retiring from the previous games, in that it resets everything. They would probably also include something similar to what they did in EO4, where you can use an item to raise their level to a cap with a limited number of uses.

I posted this idea in the other thread but I'll put it here for a better effect: would the game work best as a prelude to EO 1 or an epilogue? Whichever it is, I just hope our awesome town NPCs remain. How I miss Valerie and Shilleka!

I'd say epilogue. People will care more about "what happened to X" than...whatever they would add for a prequel. Anything new they brought in to the prequel would be something they'd have to kill off by the end of it, since it would cause a contradiction with EO1. Unless they retconned EO1... Anyway the point is the events after the story of EO1 would be more interesting, and they could do more with it.
Here's something I thought of. The extra stratum (and it's boss) didn't really have a whole lot to do with EO1's plot. For that matter, they had no real explanation. What if they expand the story to encompass the 6th stratum, making the former extra boss into the new "last boss"? ...And then add a brand new, 7th stratum after the 6th? That'd be pretty neat...

...Well maybe I'm just dumb and didn't get the subtle hints. To be fair, the Etrian Odyssey Wiki also says that there's no explanation for the stratum's boss, but then...that wiki is super lacking on updates, so it's possible no one corrected it.
Really, I was always under the impression the boss was some sort of corruption within the tree. Though, considering what Yggdrassil did to the , I wouldn't doubt that the thing you fight is the true Yggdrassil. That being said, there's still not a whole lot of motivation for killing it, aside from 'because you've killed everything else and also why not?' At least with all the other extra stratum bosses, it was implied something bad would happen if you left them alive. Then again, maybe EO1 had that too and I just never noticed. I barely did any of the postgame.
