1) is the party member's grimore skill random on the "grimore chance" thing?
and 2) if I get a gun grimore bonus with gun skills on simon, is his gun damage based on his current attack power with his current weapon?

Just to echo what's been said, the protector is much better than you give them credit for. And I'd rather not rely on luck to stop an enemy's attack, if there's a better less luck based way.

^ Its not a reliable strategy since binds and ailments are not guaranteed to land, whereas the Protector's Front Guard, Defender and such can be used whenever its necessary without the possibility of failure.

That may work in a short fight, but not in a prolonged fight. But if you don't want to use a protector, then don't.
