Also it seems like the drop conditions for rare drops is different from EO1. Will check on other bosses, but I'm fairly sure they made every rare drop have a condition attached to it, like EO4 did. This makes the game a lot easier IMO.

i went through the original EO1 fight assuming he was weak to volt, and ended up with the best bow in the game

Oh my God, I take it back. Highlander + Gunner combo is ridiculously broken. Get a Grimmoire with Action Boost on it and combine a Gunner's Action Boosted Elemental Bullets with Highlander's Spear Assist...
