Hmm, apparently one can unlock Gunner/Highlander for classic if you beat story, but there's still apparently one save file...

It's very likely he/she is correct. The class roster has no additional slots for gunner or highlander - it's full, unlike the other Etrians which had open slots.
So if Classic Mode gets em, it's likely simply as characters that join the guild, such as the EO4 lot.
But I can recruit my hexer and ronin right away, so I'm fine. Hexer's SOOO useful.

You would think that the developers may put in two save slots, one for Classic and another one for Modern, because there's a possibility that one who finishes Classic/Modern might want to tackle it the other way around. But nope.
