Is it true that you can't transfer your password from the PAL version to the NTSC version?

don't get me wrong, I'm still stuck on B14F

Yes, the European version of EO1 has a longer password that doesn't fit in the N-American version of EO2. There is no European version of EO2.

Awwwww. There's no way I'm getting an american copy of Etrian Odyssey 1. :'(

But I'm planning to get EO2 and 3 one day. I suppose.
