Bosses and EXP

I have a question about bosses and the experience given out. I just beat Iwaopeln and got 0exp for it. I then beat Alraune who also gave me no experience. I then re-beat Golem who had previously given me ~3000exp * 5 (I think) but this time I once again got no experience. Is there some sort of requirement one must fulfil in order to get experience from bosses or do some bosses just not give experience? It might be worth it to note that the first time I (think I) got experience from Golem I instakilled him with Kubiuchi. Thanks for any help with this and sorry for asking a question with my first post, I know its rude :oops:.
