The European version of EO1 has two-letter class abbreviations, so it's not impossible to use names that have the same first letter.

Class advancements eh? Like starting with a basic Ronin, then after some time leveling up, you can choose either Overhead, Seigan or Iai to specialize in, permanently, unless you choose to retire of course. Landsknechts (Landsknechten?) could have either swords or axes, War Magi either healing or attacking (staff or swords), etc. Hmm, I like the idea. Reminds me of Seiken Densetsu 3 (the sequel to Secret Of Mana). Although that game had two class changes, not just one.

No. EO doesn't need class changes. They'd change the game too much, unless it's just a class name change and/or a portrait change.
