The story, as I understand it, is very loosely connected to the first. This game seems to mainly take the first Etrian and build upon its engine.

Yeah, from what most people have told me, there is very little connection and maybe only when you plug in a password into the game when you start it.

The game takes place in the same world, and there's some mention of the first dungeon, but doesnt rasie much questions.
