I don't know if this kind of thing has already been posted but I did a quick guide on how to farm effectively on my own forum.

Now nothing is garunteed but these have worked for me upto the 3rd stratum.

How to build a Farming Party in Etrian Odyssey II

First things first the basic rules.
- Don't get Greedy. Trying to do too much early on will only result in a dead party that will waste time or cost you valuable cash you can't spare.
- Level your Farming party in a safe way even if it takes longer it's still worth it
- Always take 2 higher level fighters in with them for the early stages this may drop to 1 or even none later in the game as your Farmers begin to learn the art of war.

So you've done a little bit of exploring and een if your still on 1F the same principles apply I also won't be giving any spoilers just some tips and Tricks.

Alot of people claim to know the perfect Harvesting team line up, well it's just not true I'm not one of these people I do not know the perfect team because somethings may work better for you than did for me and vice versa.
I started with taking the protector and Survivalist out of my main combat party as they were both level 10 when I started farming this is something I suggest everyone do. Having the safety net of your 2 higehr level characters will help with getting started. I now use a protector and a Beast as the beast works just like a Protector but also has a great gathering skill allowing it to take items from all 3 points using just 1 skill but you wont unlock the Beast until you complete the first main task on Stratum 1.

Now goto the Guild page in the town and recruit 3 more Survivalists. I put a F. before their name so I could tell them apart later so F.Giles, F.Choppy etc

Next step is to kit them out in the best armour you can currently afford if that happens to be nothing don't worry the cash will soon be pouring in.

So now what do you do with those stats you'll have 3 for each person. Now some people insist it's easier to give each one a certain skill such as 1 has all take 1 all mine etc or to split so each has 1 point into every skill. This is pointless early in the game. My advice is to find the easiest to gather point such so find a resource point very close to either the door back to the town or close to a warp point of somekind.

A smaller walk to the resource point will ensure you meet minimum resistance on the way there. Now if your still on the first stratum make sure you are able to walk back easy because you wont yet be able to afford as many warpwires as later on which I use as a quick get away as generally at the start of the game the cost of a warp wire outweighs the cash you'll get coming in. If you can easily afford a few Warpwires then go for it and use them to make your escape.

Once you've located the ideal item point look at what kind it is now lets say for example it's a take point now you should know exactly what to do. Thats right max out the take skill on your 3 farming survivalists. Now go raid that point. Then return to town sell all the items then go to the inn and sleep till the next morning... Rinse and repeat till happy.

I have discovered a possible trick which may or may not be a glitch but I'm using it right upto the 3rd stratum with little ill effect. As you're hammering A to get all these items you'll likely come across a mean monster that jumps out at you and will likely slaughter your entire team or just your new green survivalists. I found that by making sure you are on a red enemy danger meter (ie about to enter a standard fight in the next step or so) you will be much less likely to encounter a hidden monster than if you went in on a green or especially blue so if needs be just strafe on the spot till you have it right and go take the goods.

Leveling your harvesting party should be a priority after you've got used to them and as you move points. A few battles in the early stages will help get their levels up as the 2 higher level characters do the work. As they gain exp and up the levels you'll max out their gathering skills the best thing to do next is upgrade their agility to avoid attacks better but skills that avoid running into enemies are also advised. Luck is a good stat to put a point into as that raises the chances of getting better drops from enemeies or finding more valuable good in the Labyrinth. At the stage I am on I'm using the main FOE from 5F to raise my Farmers level but putting 3 of them in with my 2 biggest baddest dude from my main party who are capable of taking it out by themselves. If you try that I recommend bringing Nectars and Medica's to ensure your Farmers are alive by the end other wise it's a wasted trip.

I hope this helps to get some good en coming in and let you progress more effieicently. I admit I'm only on 11F so things may change later but you are good to go for now.
