Even the most mundane, cliche idea can become an international phenomenon.
But, if it's video games we are talking about:
You just have to think: there is no storyline that hasn't already been created. The question is: what new things do you bring to that storyline?

Meh ... the basics of it are covered but that's because we're breaking them down to some rudimentary level. From there, sure, there's differences but they all "start" from something done to death. Doesn't really change things to be honest ... well, unless you try playing a few games in a row all with the same basic plot.
Incidentally, that GTA4: Carcer City thing doesn't exist unless I somehow lost touch with reality in my two day "lost in the void" thing ... Carcer City was from Manhunt. Probably obviously a shop or something but it is 5 AM, I'm tired and in a bad mood (apparently?!) so whatever!
...the more you know.

Bah! I fixed it! I even pulled it off wikipedia just to make sure it was [s]100%[/s] 95% correct since when I looked, there were about 5 different variations on google. WTF is up with that?! No wonder I grabbed a wrong one.
I swear... if it's wrong on wikipedia, I can not be held accountable.
