Sure, some combos are natural counters to certain other combos, assuming the skill of the opponents is comparable (and I guess it'd have to be one on one with no other stuff going on, just to keep this controlled.) Badass: arm shield, gauntlet and short sword on each arm/hand.

Larger shields feel cumbersome to me. Same with longer swords and polearms. But of course, as has been pointed out, it's generally more about the skill of the wielder than the weapon itself. And context.
