Things have been easier since I discovered "long rope" counts differently than "rope" but spawns the same thing. That works for a lot of things, and is quite useful in challenge mode. Eg. Gun=pistol, vine=rope, chicken=hen, plane=biplane, etc. Feels kinda like cheating, though. ...
