Not really. It's only use is for better carving, but you sacrifice rewards. You can get Wide Range with Qurupeco armor, and also get Evasion and Defense. By the time you can get the armor, as in fighting Uragaan and Barioth, you'll have access to better stuff. And it has only one slot, while at that...

Sword and shield is good. Quick attacks and blocking any attack and roars. However, having a proper element is key with it, so make sure you make plenty of them.
Also, consider the hammer Plume Flint. Will help with some later monsters. Get the super pound down, and rape face (literally).
