Poison is generally the way to go for early game. Hexers are a late bloomer since their best skills need to be maxed to be actually useful.

I've always preferred playing as Guy. I've wanted to try playing as Natalia but usually my brother is playing as her so... that's out of the question.

IIRC she joins under leveled. By the time you reach the desert oasis, everyone should be around level 20 to 22, with her at around level 14 or so. Vanguard is a massive speed boost. Maxing it will usually have your Landsknect always go before anyone else, even rare breeds. This is with swords equipped too! Linking actually isn't that great until you get Improved Link at level 20. That said though, Freezing Link synergies perfectly with Ice Run...
