No, there are stores where you can buy your items - and Alchemy recipes. So far, the system has been pretty easy and I've not even had to bother with it much at all.

I mean, it had its moments, but, seriously... after I wed one of the girls I was like "why am I playing this anymore?"

Fighting game to me yeah is on the idea of the "vs" thing. I mean, there's no other reason to play it than to be fighting against an opponent and story is usually none existant or something stupid that's been slapped together for the sheer hell of it (I give you Brawl's Subspace Emissary)....
