As for Microsoft Office; I got a free copy from my university a long time ago and just kept all the install files. Free Office 2000 for everyone!
I used to type all my stories in plain ol' notepad.

I hope you enjoy Midnight! I haven't re-read yet (my opinion of a book can change drastically based on a re-read) but I really enjoyed it the first time around. There's definitely some unique magical elements in it. I do remember it was the tiniest bit slow to start, not as bad as Lord of the White ...
