As for my own writing, completely derailed. I lost interest in my story. I was trying to write a modern-set, almost sci-fi type story, and made the mistake of reading 3000+ pages of fantasy novels instead.

Hence now I'm wanting to pick back up a fantasy setting.

I disagree with every fiber of my being that defaulting to "he" is appropriate.
