You don't have to catch them to get credited for completing the pokedex anymore though. To complete the "main" pokedex (ie, the pokedex for the land you're in, so, Sinnoh [I think?] for Pearl) you just have to see the pokemon, so either wild encounters (regardless of whether you catch it)...
