Re: Games you are playing
So... team fortress is done downloading. Dunno when or if I'll play... still "meh" on the concept of actually trying it.
I hate community games because I feel like I could screw up and just embarrass myself.

Play offline mode for a bit to get used to stuff. I felt like that too, but then realized after a while that none of the matches really matter since you'll be joining pubs and not competitive games where people just want to win. You'll be fine.

Re: Games you are playing
TF2 is pretty tolerant of bad/new players compared to other things, especially shit like League of Legends. If you're not being an amazing medic, you don't really stand out, you don't usually get called out, and you can just disconnect if you feel uncomfortable.
Re: Games you are playing
L4D2's community is much worse. If you are playing, for example, Scavenge mode on No Mercy (mainly rooftops) and if you don't use the Charger to run down off the building with a survivor in your grasp, then they possibly make a vote to kick you out of the game.
On the other hand, the TF2 community loves "your mom" jokes.

kicking is both a curse and a blessing
to banish a unruly and slash or unpleasant character of ill repute
or just to remove that annoying fucker who keeps bringing you down because he cant be awesome like you

Re: Games you are playing
When I first came to TF2 after playing TFC for about a decade, I used very anonymous names, usually based on fictional characters I liked (such as Giygas). Just because, I too, felt rather paranoid about the impression I might leave on people.
Of course, I never really had much of a beginner phase. Not to come across as egotistical, but I started out pretty beast from the get go. Even though it handles nothing like TFC (what, with no grenades, a completely new Scout, Pyro, Medic and Spy, bunnyhopping removed), something about the experience felt very natural and simple to grasp.
Of course I cannot promise everything will be as obvious now as they were five years ago. Now every class has some twenty new weapons/items to look out for. While some are obvious, others will take experience to learn and understand.
And yeah, Ninten is right. With games like L4D, WoW or Global Agenda, there are so many theoretically ideal methods of doing things in a very specific way. Everyone has a general idea of what to expect, how exactly it should be handled, and what everyone should do, no questions asked. No one on a TF2 pub will taze you for being a Huntsman Sniper (bow and arrow) or Demoknight (sword and shield), even though everyone knows their stock equipment is vastly superior. Just enjoy yourself.

Re: Games you are playing
I'm actually better as a Huntsman Sniper. Maybe I just do not have much patience in actual sniping or something, but prefer shooting then ducking before the shot even lands. Still wondering how I got all the milestones, though...
Re: Games you are playing
Default sniper rifle for me, thank you. I hate the fact that you can't deal headshots with the Sydney Sleeper.

Re: Games you are playing
The Huntsman, Gunslinger, Chargin' Targe and Phlogistinator all allow you to play a class in a way that you could have success where you would otherwise fail using the default loadout. Barring the Gunslinger in some circumstances, they all just make it much easier to play though usually require a slightly different skillset.
The Tomislav, Natascha, Liberty Launcher and Sydney Sleeper also make their respective classes easier to play, but in a more redundant sense.
