Yes, you can use previous FE characters in (DLC) scenarios. Which is presumably why they had Ayra and Innes in one screen.

I found the support defence more interesting.

That does sound sad. I was actually going to finish it today. Might just wait on more information on if Bioware may address the issue.

While I can accept the indoctrination theory, it doesn't cover the fact that the galaxy is still screwed. Honestly, though, considering how ME3 ended, I think that the ending I would have preferred would have been this:
