Well... hrrrm... I honestly couldn't give an answer to that as I didn't know anything about that. Most of my knowledge comes from what Vapour Trail has told me and some wikipedia entries. So... you got me on this one and I'd like to know the answer now, too.
Edit: After going through a bunch of articles and looking at packaging art, I think you're right. The ONLY time I see SMT tacked onto a Persona title is in the Americanized versions.

Trying to figure out how the series works is mind-boggling at best. I just think of it like this way: MegaTen is the name that all Shin Megami Tensei games and its spin-off titles are known by. Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner, Majin Tensei and the rest are all separate MegaTen sub-series. They're all related by way of the MegaTen name, but each sub-series is distinct from the others, and often unrelated story or gameplay-wise.
It gets somewhat convoluted because the first Devil Summoner and most (or all?) of the Devil Children games have the Shin Megami Tensei logo in their names, but aren't considered part of the main Shin Megami Tensei series. I just call Shin Megami Tensei I through III as well as Shin Megami Tensei if . . . the primary series, just because it makes the most sense.
Also I took another stab at the bonus dungeon in Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja. I made it to floor 28, then I died because I accidentally swallowed a Fire Pill instead of throwing it OMFGEKPFJIODO
EDIT: Regarding Persona -- none of them had the SMT logo until the US release of Persona 3, not even the Japanese releases.
