For fuck's sake, I wasn't going to buy a Wii U until they had the next SSB and some other awesome games. I'm pretty sure Wind Waker is my favorite game of all time, so I'm getting one for whenever this is out. Urgh, Nintendo.

Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem is a thing that is happening and I will own it. No matter the platform. The concept alone is like pure magic.
Magic exists.

Critical failure-rolls are awesome. I play with items on so that Bob-ombs will suddenly spawn to kill everybody.

I was trying to say is not that they didn't try to make it the best game they could, but that it didn't turn out that way. You have some excellent points, and I agree in most aspects. Your party game thing is particularly true, but even so I like it. If I want to take it seriously, I'll grab my gc and play Melee, but I'm usually just as happy to play Brawl. I think they can both exist as two seperate things for seperate audiences.
Also this is just my opinion, but I really, really like Lucario. His moves fit together well and aren't a carbon copy of any other character. I wouldn't call his power multiplier based on damage a gimmick, either. It's a neat concept they tested out that worked pretty well in your favor if you had the skill to last until 300%. They may not use it in the next game, but I think it was a cool attempt at something different that wasn't OP or on the other hand useless. I find that you can string moves together nicely with him, combinations of that handy dodge when you change up a blast and the side A build up a lot of damage, and the arial down a is quite good at attacking from above to lead into some c-stick "combos." Anyways, Lucario is a particular favorite of mine, easy top 3. If anyone cares I also like Marth a lot, as well as Link. I probably play as Ness the most often, even if he is severely worse in this game. He's just so... Fun to play as. Thwack!

But that is just the thing: the whole Aura mechanic is not really a play style. It is just an underlying modifier that may or may not impact how you use the character, but it honestly does not really make any defining traits for how he is played. Compare it to the agile, combo-centric Sheik or the projectile-oriented Samus. Lucario does not really have an actual direction. Just another slugfester in a slugfesty game. Such a mechanic would have made sense on a character like Bowser or Ike.
I do not think there is a single character that is not fun, but the characters could have much more enriched purpose, gameplay and presentation if they focus on a smaller roster. Lucario's moves, in my opinion, are grossly uninspired compared to newcomers like Pit, Ike, Meta Knight, and Dedede. They all stick to a particular design and focus on making that the best experience they can.
I also just want to add that a clone that plays completely differently from its root, is better than a completely fresh character that does not really come up with anything interesting. Ganondorf, for example, cannot play like Captain Falcon at all (perhaps a fault of Ganny's specials actually being good in Melee), compared to characters that were just slight deviations from their roots, such as Roy or Pichu.
Edit - I just want to add that Masahiro Sakurai acknowledges the flaws of making the game bigger and bigger, and has already stated that the new game will not be going in the same direction, which is reassuring. Our beloved Pit shows up on the , so I hope he sticks around. ^~^
