I've been playing the free Mahjong game that came with my laptop.

It's so addicting...

I think Twilight Princess had like the best combat ever, and it needed more challenging combat with other humanoid enemies. The Darknuts and lizard guys were so fun to fight. The final battle with Ganondorf (the swordfight part [this is not a spoiler]) was fucking great.

For the RPG I will inevitably make, I'd like it to be like that, but you can hit R to switch characters. I'd also like to be able to switch weapon, which each sort of weapon having its own strengths and weaknesses. I would have liked to downsize those hammers and flails you would get in Zelda games, and use them as regular weapons.

In big battles with lots of stuff going on, I like the idea of creating simple units that you can use for backup. Disgaea comes to mind.

How do you guys feel about entering a "battle mode" control scheme when enemies show up? Like, you draw your sword, and all the controls change from interaction to combat?

Devil May Cry 3 says hi.

Personally, I found Twilight Princess (and Zelda games in general) not ... that great. I mean, they're just far too simple. For what they aim for, though, they're not bad just not that "amazing" to me now. My only gripe then is that the game is about 5 steps below "Christ this is easy," and it only gets easier with every game (seriously, an in-game solver for the next release?). Also, PH was terrible but maybe I'm still biased by that god damn place you return to every time you did anything. ANYTHING.

Most the "flashy action games" win my vote for best combat. There's just something fun, to me, about pulling off crazy insane shit, for lack of a better way to describe it. That's also probably why Kingdom Hearts combat is fun and yet Infinite Undiscovery is not (as much).

Incidentally, IU has the sheathe/unsheathe for different buttons. I don't really agree that KH is the same since it's an automatic switch but that just depends on semantics I suppose as, really, they're the same. In IU, there's a few times (even early game) that you swap between combat and "non-combat" to get through an area (the intro "dungeon" actually). As for character swap, IU also has you stuck with the MC but you can switch to the other characters for small things (i.e., switching control to Aya to use her sniping).

Edit: More precisely, you press X (was it X?) and then choose one of your three party members and you get to do one of their specials. To say you get to control them is a bit ... wrong (though for Aya you do since ... you need to manually aim it). More of an issuing of orders, I guess?

Also, IU was terribad but I mostly blame slow story (AND GOD AWFUL VOICES). The combat wasn't bad, really. I haven't finished the game however so ... who knows. It got put on the shelf due to real life and hasn't left due to other games >>

ToD Remake (PS2) also has character swapping (shown at around 5:35):

Anyway, this kind of stuff is what I love from a "free" combat system. Stuff like combos and other ... well, ridiculous stuff that looks awesome to watch as you do it. Crazy stuff like this.

Yet I still play more turn-based RPGs then these :( Oh well. Looking forward to Bayonetta I suppose (CLIMAX ACTION GAME ... ... ... oh dear Kamiya).

I hate games that are WAY too flash like the youtube video one Scy just showed. I don't GIVE A SHIT about combos. It's just not that fun, either. After pressed A button, down+B plus triple Y.... OH FUCK IT ALL!

Tales of Symphonia's combat style turned me off like this as well. I guess I'm a simplistic button masher. ^_^ But KH2 was kewl with how you would be mid-fight and then it would come up with the triangle that you had to quickly press just in time to get the "special attack" to work. Or like with the fight with Xemnas on the tower, depending on how long you wait you get a kewler even looking attacking.

But, it was simple to do. Just press ONE button. ONE ONE ONE ONE. And then press O to jump.

Plus, after doing 50+ battles in games like ToS, you have seen the sparkly attacks SO MANY fucking times you just wish it would stop, give you the damage, and GET ON WITH IT

I hate the combos from actual fighting games, though I like it in games where they have a lot of freedom. Like in smash brothers, sometimes a combo can just be a combination of jumping and hitting Up + A. I never have to memorize anything. I hate games where it's like QUARTER CIRCLE A DOWN DOWN B FLIP YOUR CONTROLLER OVER A AGAIN.

(that's what I was trying to convey in my first paragraph but I think you did a better job of it)
