I can't stand cinematic summons etc. kind of stuff ... but if it's like DMC, NG, or the Tales of games and I'm actually DOING the attacks then it's totally awesome. Besides, the Tales games don't pause to show you the attack unless it's a Mystic Arte / Hi-ougi / CURRENT_GAME_TERMINOLOGY.

Also, those aren't even remotely close to necessary for the actual game. I can't stand just mashing a single button as it's boring as hell. As much fun as KH was to watch, the combat was just mash square a lot and then the occasional QTE (I hate QTE. I hate QTE. I hate QTE.) to spice things up. Worth saying though that QTE in KH isn't that bad. Still, it has quickly become an overused mechanic. I blame Shenmue. Still.

That and ... uh ... the Tales of games are attack a lot and use an Arte. It's not Fighting Game calibur HALF CIRCLE, X DURING THIRD FRAME, CANCEL, FAKE FIREBALL, USE INVINCIBILITY FRAME TO .... etc ... that level of memorization is ridiculous (even to me). Who knows. I guess I'm weird like that to enjoy DMC, NG, etc. stuff when they can be compared to fighting game mechanics. Who knows.

I'm still confused how Tales could be "complex." Sure, linking Artes and such requires more but ... most games is just attack and Arte use. That's like KH attacking and finishing a combo with a spell. KH is overly simple combat. Sure, it's fun to watch, easy to do, and all that jazz but it's "boring" to execute for me.

But ... in the end, it's just personal taste. I wrote an awful lot to end up with this conclusion hrm... Really comes down to the fact I just like more complexity in my games. Over-simplification bores me (or lack of a challenge).

Biggest irony of all this? I want to play Kingdom Hearts 2 now. I hate you :( :( :( Ar Tonelico 2 needs to release faster T.T

Edit: I'll admit ToS has a pretty slow combat system compared to the other Tales games. Really slow. Abyss helps a bit (especially if you use Guy over Luke) with Fonic Fields and stuff to speed things up. I still think ToD Remake to be one of the best of the Tales combat systems (hence why I want Tales of Hearts here so badly T.T). </bias> </whine>

would you people stop using fucking abbreviations

anyway, I hate cinematic attacks too, but I mean actually pushing buttons while you are doing it, and not like a fighting game, like you are pressing the dive button to dive and the fucking explode button to fucking explode

anyone ever played Actraiser 2?

QTE = Quick Time Events.

Edit: If you don't know what these are ... PRESS TRIANGLE TO NOT DIE. PRESS X TO DUCK. PRESS SQUARE TO PULL THE TRIGGER. And so forth. Those things. Shenmue, God of War, Resident Evil 4, Kingdom Hearts 2, Uncharted, every action / adventure / shooters / practically everything since.

DMC = Devil May Cry
NG = Ninja Gaiden
ToS / ToD = Tales of Sympohnia / Tales of Destiny
KH = Kingdom Hearts
CNAR-LMBS = Combination Aerial Linear Motion Battle System.
AR-LMBS = Aerial Linear Motion Battle System.

Did I miss any? ^^ And, again, I love Tales of battle systems with their awkwardly long acronyms.

Anyway, played Actraiser 2 an eternity ago. I remember nothing.

Tos had the right+b, right+A, and other stuff that I can't remember off the top of my head. It wasn't hard to remember the buttons... but what attacks did I equip to those buttons and then those moments when in an intense battle to accidentally press the wrong button and have accidentally cast some spell and think "WTF?! I PRESSED RIGHT!! I PRESSED RIGHT!! NOOOOOOO!!" particularly when it was my "cure" spell I was trying to access but missed. It got so bad that I just put it on the "press A-only" or something. (again I can't remember the battle schematic off the top of my head so I may be off with the buttons).

You are VERY right though on one thing: playing ToS and dealing with the spells is no where near as bad as dealing with FF-summons.

Oh and another game that has the feature is Disgaea, too, that I'd like to throw out there.

Yes, the attacks are very kewl and all and they might be short, but it's just the repetitiveness of those attacks. And them annoyingly calling out the names or some strange line or another.

I do want to correct an earlier statement. Saying "I HATE games with..." was too harsh of a sentence. Despite my annoyance with the features, I still spent 80+ hours on ToS (before my sister saved over my file and erased all my hard work) and Disgaea still remains one of my fave games. So let me just correct that statement. I don't "hate" the games, but I just don't prefer these features.

My main ToS file clocked just over 105 hours. ^-^

Whenever I play with friends, I really like to stick to Raine or Kratos/Zelos. Healing is what I do best. The first time I beat the game, I used Lloyd because he just steam LOL'd everything using the same sequence for all eternity. Now when I play alone, Lloyd is just too dull. I like Colette. :3 I would play as a healer alone, but the computer is too stupid to be relied on for anything other than, well, healing.

I never mapped Healing ... kept the C-stick for forcing combinations (likewise, Right Analog in ToV I use for draining bars for Final Artes) or stealing (fuck you Colette I hate you). Always left the B-button Artes for whomever I was controlling (Lloyd and then Presea; sometimes Sheena) I usually let the AI handle healing (unless it was a boss that was, you know, actually difficult then it was menus time!) in these games.

Obligatory I hate Colette. Sorry for everyone who liked her character but ... I have no idea but she never clicked with me (<3 Sheena and Presea though) at all. Then again, that type usually irks me anyway (I still hate you too Sophia [SO3]) so who knows. Mmm ... Tear :). Also disliking Estelle (<3 Rita and Judith) in Vesperia ... hrm.

You can disable the animations in Disgaea (2 and 3) :) But, yeah, they're fucking annoying as hell to watch the millionth (or third or fourth ...) time. Disabled it pretty early in Disgaea 3 and put it back on whenever I get a new skill and want to see it. Over the top is awesome to watch. Once. Or twice. Or to yell at the screen when you do a long series of attacks and forgot to redisable the damn effects and are stuck in 5 minutes of attacks that should only take 30 seconds.

...what?

Colette is fun to play with but as a character in terms of the actual events and story, sometimes she's strong, other times she's boring. Presea's story is pretty tragic, though I liked her character more before that certain event more than after. It was interesting!

I just want to alert anybody talented with paint or photoshop i am going to start a Etrian Odyssey clan and i need a 32 by 32 pixel avatar i have tried multiple times but every time i feel it doesn't feel like it represent EO enough. If you could help me with anything from advice to actually making one i'd be very grateful and of course i would give credit if wanted. but seriously anything would help. The game it is for is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots specifically the online portion of it better known as MGO or Metal Gear Online.

NOTE: Maximum of twelve colors due to game limitation's

NOTE 2: Elysienne That is one AWESOME SIG >.> and i mean like well no words i can use are adequate :D
Many things about the kitsune is mercurial, from their moods to their treatment of humans, to even the abilities some possess. Kitsune have a depth of personality as deep or even deeper than those of other Japanese characters. The reason for this, according to one source, is that the kitsune is the Trickster, in Japanese culture. They are there to teach those around them lessons.

I don't know why I haven't bought that game yet. I love Tales of Symphonia. ;-;

Edit - Thanks Stealthbox. :D Now if I could figure out how to work the gallery, I'd upload the original. >:/

Good for you, Kino ^_^

I know that I have it already for the PSP (and PS2), but I ordered Disgaea for the DS today. Pleinair as a unlockable character... sweet XD

I'm also kinda hooked on Runes of Magic for the moment.
