I once again must state how much I don't like level up systems. I love being able to hunt treasure or learn techniques to improve my character... but killing 25951755782 mooks and gaining points in intelligence? Really? Gross. One reason they are there is so players just don't avoid everything but loot systems and having a game that's actually fun prevents that. Do I never want to see a system like that again? Of course not. There is a time and place for them and I don't like how more and more games are using them.

One cool system my brother told me of is this hockey game. The user creates a hockey player and controls just that player. The more they play, the more they improve. In online games everyone on the ice is another player and every year they have a cup with the best players available. :D
