I meant win vs. a similar game without a female protagonist. I'm not good at Metroid type games. If Castlevania is like that, OOE will probably be the first and last game of the series for me.

Nah. The Castlevania games are not so stale and have their own panic buttons.

There's a reason for the term Metroidvania. The recent 2D Castlevania games (for ... quite awhile actually) play like a Metroid game (side scroller with giant map, power-ups as you progress, etc.).

^ The exploration is like a Metroid game. The actual gameplay is of its own. I think the RPG elements have a greater impact on the gameplay (IE being able to level, cast spells, cheese your way through battle with items, etc.)

I didn't mean to say exactly alike ... sort of like how you can say "Fallout 3 plays like an FPS." It's just for the basic gameplay element (navigating a giant map, combat is similar [in terms of how it is done], and progression is limited by power-ups to access new parts of the map, etc.). The nuances are different but the core of it is very much a side-scrolling Metroid game.

[spoiler]It's kind of sad that Metroidvania has become the term for side-scrolling games of that genre and not ... I dunno, something else. The Megaman Advent games for the DS, EPIC's XBLA game, etc. are referred to as that.[/spoiler]

I mean, don't let it mislead you ... you can very much hate a Metroid game and end up loving OoE. But if it's the exploration aspect you didn't like (or the basics of the combat) then uh ... yeah.

And by basics of the combat ... I just mean like you can say the basics of Persona and Final Fantasy (the turn based ones at least) are the same. Yeah, the 1-more system is different than whatever the fuck Final Fantasy calls it but you get the picture of "how" the combat basically works.

...IN SHORT, just try it haha~
