How come you never play games if you're a game writer? Don't you need to keep up on the latest standards? And of course play the games you're writing for.

Puzzle Quest: Galactrix is good.
At first I feared that it would be unplayable because of the unresponsive controls (taps don't register easily, and menu items are small; sometimes taps register way off, causing you to make mistakes), but that problem doesn't happen too often, and I got used to using the stylus very carefully.
The hexagonal tiles make for really different strategy than square ones, which is fun. Hacking leapgates isn't very hard, but opponents are sometimes just a little too tough. Doesn't matter, because the whole map is open for exploration soon after the start of the game and you can have up to four quests open at a time. This makes the game feel even less linear than its predecessor.
Various quests ask you to defeat opponents, which causes your standing with those factions to deteriorate quickly. Hostile factions will attack you soon after you enter their systems, so this made travel a bit dangerous at first. I just did a series of quests though that makes it so I can avoid battles I don't want, and I also discovered an excellent mining spot. You can improve your standing with factions by selling resources to them, which means that with some time invested in mining you can become friends with everyone (even the Pirates faction, which starts out completely hostile), making galactic travel safe again.
Galactrix is definitely not without flaws, but they're not overwhelming, and the game is every bit as addictive as the first Puzzle Quest.
