You do want it.
It's gonna be fucking awesome -> I've played it, and thought it was,
And all reviews give it a 9/10 etc. So you DO need it!

Ah, so there are others who know Phantasy Star
How did you like the demo of Portable?
I haven't looked into Portable 2 yet, but I saw that the Sega PS:P forum was nearly all about PS:P2, so I guess it's going to be pretty good at least.
Also, what are your thoughts on Phantasy Star Ø? I think it might be interesting to check out, after I finish Portable of course. It looks kinda different though, more fantasy, less sci-fi. And I don't like the idea of gendered classes. I want to play my character the way I want, not limited arbitrarily.

The demo of PS:P is a great demo. PS:P2 is going to be awesome because it has an infrastructure mode and an actual 3D hub instead of the 2D menu thing.
I imported PSzero once it released in JP and then bought the NA version when it came out so I guess you can say I REALLY like it. It is the best wi-fi experience you can get on the DS thus far. The game itself plays a lot more like the original PSO than the PSU series. I wouldn't let the whole gender class thing get you down too much because really any class combination can be made to be awesome with the right build.
Once PS:P2 is localized though I doubt I'll touch PSzero much.

PS:P:
I just finished story mission 3. Things are heating up, with tougher monsters, and booby-traps in nasty spots (between the loot for example). Dungeons are also a less linear. That boss monster though, that was really something. I had a team of four, and two of them died twice each before it went down. I don't care if an NPC stole my kill (no idea actually who delivered the last hit), just glad to be victorious. Ooph. If they're going to be this hard I'll need something that does more damage than this rifle. Maybe that grenade launcher I got would work, or a better shotgun or plasma cannon than the puny ones I've seen so far.

Like that. It's huge and fast, tramples or swipes you, breathes fire, and spawns some nasty little critters too.[/spoiler]
