As for DD vs disc, the UMD loads slower than digital copies and are usually more expensive than their digital counterparts. It's not _too_ terrible of a process to keep track of them all but it does suck. Personally, I'd go about hacking a PSP just for the sake of being able to keep them conveniently on sticks without having to go the round-about way. As long as you keep your morality in check and don't go off downloading them and merely use it for convenience's sake (much like some R4/Supercard/etc. for the DS if only for having 2-16+ GB of storage). Plus, ripping your own PS1 games for on-the-go functionality~
Edit: I like having my physical copies but DD is sometimes just fucking convenient, really. And cheaper. Plus, it's more money for the actual developers typically (or, rather, just a lower price point for you and they get the same returns) than physical copies.
As for SD Card vs Memory Stick ... yeah, it's just a Sony proprietary. For what it's worth, they created their own prior to SD taking off if I recall and had the largely superior format for awhile (in terms of storage space) but SD has done better since. Kind of like Apple eschewing pretty much everything for their proprietary connectors.

Indeed, once bought, no-one can recharge you for something. You're entitled to the software that you paid for unless you willingly give up your rights. This is why its legal to possess ROMs as long as you have a physical copy and is also why you can claim replacement discs and suchlike. At least, as far as I'm aware.
